Glen Iris House Extension
A second-storey extension designed for connection, comfort and modern family living.
PROJECT OVERVIEW
Designed for Growth: a Glen Iris House Extension for Modern Family Living
As a custom home builder in Glen Iris, DMI Build partnered with the clients and their architect to bring that vision to life. The brief was clear — create a second-storey addition that felt integrated and intentional, both in structure and style.
The final design transformed the home, adding three new bedrooms, a dedicated study, and an open-plan kitchen and living zone. Every space was tailored to support modern family life, making this Glen Iris house extension a thoughtful response to how the family truly lives.

INTERIOR OVERVIEW
Interior Design: Light, Comfort and Functionality
Ground Floor Updates
Inside the home, every detail was designed to support modern family living with warmth, clarity, and flow. The ground floor features newly installed rich timber flooring, replacing the original carpet and immediately elevating the feel of each space. A sleek white granite benchtop and stainless steel splashback give the open-plan kitchen a clean, durable edge that pairs beautifully with the home’s natural textures.
Upstairs Additions
Upstairs, the new second-storey addition introduced three bedrooms and a dedicated study, each designed to feel spacious, calm, and private. The client chose Cavalier Bremworth pure wool carpet from New Zealand for its luxurious feel and superior acoustic control, perfect for quieter living zones.
We didn’t just add space — we created
a better way for the family to live, connect, and grow.
Natural Light & Connection
Thoughtfully placed skylights allow natural light to pour into central areas of the home, brightening the heart of the floorplan. A large rear balcony extends the upstairs living space, creating a seamless indoor-outdoor transition that maximises fresh air, sunlight, and garden views.
Master Ensuite Retreat
The master ensuite is a standout, designed as a private retreat with dramatic dark tiling, a full-height glass shower, and a sculptural freestanding bathtub positioned beneath a skylight. The pairing of moody tones with clean lines and timber cabinetry brings a refined, spa-like calm to the space.

EXTERIOR OVERVIEW
Exterior Design: Materials That Make a Statement
Bold Meets Balanced
From the outside, this Glen Iris house extension balances boldness with restraint. The second-storey addition feels fully integrated, not an afterthought, thanks to smart structural planning and a carefully chosen material palette.
A Refined Material Palette
The design team selected vertical timber battens, fibre cement cladding, and expansive double-glazed panels to complement the suburban setting while creating contrast, rhythm, and visual clarity. The natural variation in materials adds texture and interest to the street frontage without overwhelming it.
“The final result exceeded our expectations, every space
feels intentional and effortless.”
Built for the Site
Set on a tight inner-suburban site, we carefully constructed the extension to preserve the footprint of the original home while significantly increasing functionality and liveable space. The result is a bold architectural statement that remains practical, context-sensitive, and timeless.
Crafted for Longevity
Every exterior element was selected not just for visual appeal but for durability and low maintenance. From the sustainably sourced timber to the weather-resistant fibre cement cladding, the materials were chosen to age gracefully and perform well in Melbourne’s changing climate, ensuring the home will stand strong for years to come.
Client's Testimonial
DMI Build was the selected builder for our Glen Iris Project – an extensive renovation and addition, which presented a number of complexities.
During the tendering process, we found Dmitri to be completely transparent, honest and very helpful. Prior to signing contracts, he worked with us to meet the project budget and made a number of suggestions of areas we can look into alternatives to make necessary savings.
The project was a complex and detailed addition, which required a high level attention to detail and experience. From the beginning, Dmitri exceeded our expectations with a willingness to go above and beyond to make sure of the best outcomes were achieved through all stages of the project. Dmitri displayed a thorough knowledge of construction techniques, building codes and Australian Standards.
Above all else, the project finished on time and on budget, despite a number of contract variations along the way.
Dmitri will be a preferred builder in the future and I can comfortably recommend DMI Build for any project, irrespective of complexities.
